netflix receives 24 oscar nominations
LOS ANGELES - FEB 28: Oscar Statue at the 88th Annual Academy Awards - Press Room at the Dolby Theater on February 28, 2016 in Los Angeles, CA

Streaming video service Netflix Inc. will again win the highest award in the film industry from a traditional Hollywood studio at the Academy Awards ceremony next month.

Two Netflix movies, Mafia Epic, The Irish, and Divorce Drama Marriage Story, were nominated on Monday for the best movie trophy vetted and will be awarded on February 9 . Netflix received a total of 24 nominations, more than any other movie distributor.

The Silicon Valley giant will compete for the Academy Awards with a century-old Hollywood studio including Universal Pictures from Comcast Corp., AT & T Inc. Warner Bros. and Sony Pictures’ Columbia Pictures.

Winning the best film will strengthen Netflix’s reputation in the film business and give it new bragging rights in an increasingly competitive streaming video audience battle. The company started publishing original movies in 2015 and has been trying to build a prestigious movie library with dozens of comedies, thrillers and action movies.

But the digital video pioneers insisted that their movies were circulating at the same time or weeks after they were shown in theaters, which angered the theater owners. Major theater chains are opposed to timing and refuse to show Netflix movies. This practice also forces members of the film academy to debate how to define a film.

Last year, Netflix’s Roma competed for the best movie but failed to win.

Owen Gleiberman, the lead film critic of industry publication Variety, predicts that streaming services will again be in short supply and lose the highest award in 1917 or the Hollywood blockbuster “Huang Feihong”.

Grieberman said: “The” Irish “has a great momentum, but my own feeling is that it does not have the ability to cross the finish line.”

Warner Bros.’s dark comic origin story Joker is among all the nominees with 11 championship titles. The Irishman, Universal Pictures’ “World War I” epic in 1917 and Columbia’s Quentin Tarantino movie “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” won 10 each.

The companies behind these movies are expected to spend millions of dollars in the coming weeks to propose marriage to Oscar voters at TV commercials, digital advertising, and special events with Class A celebrities in New York and Los Angeles.

The Irish nomination tells the story of the disappearance of union leader Jimmy Hoffa, including Martin Scorsese’s best director, and Al Pacino and Joe Supporting role by Joe Pesci.

Marriage story stars Scarlett Johansson and Adam Driver played acting couples and stood out in divorce and custody battles, receiving nominations for lead roles.

Among other Netflix nominations, Klaus and I Lost My Body were named Best Animated Feature Films. The biographical film Two Popes has received three nominations.
